Congressman Nickel Hosts "Fair Maps Tour" in Fayetteville

Today, Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) hosted the “Fair Maps for North Carolina” tour in Fayetteville at the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church.

During the tour stop in Fayetteville, Congressman Nickel was joined by State Senator Val Applewhite, Fayetteville NAACP President James Buxton, and community leaders to discuss the Fair Maps Act and ending partisan gerrymandering.

"From my time in the North Carolina State Senate and now in the U.S. House of Representatives, I've witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects of partisan gerrymandering on our democracy,” said Congressman Wiley Nickel. “My FAIR MAPS Act is crucial in ensuring that politicians no longer have the power to hand-pick their own voters and predetermine election outcomes. By advocating for independent redistricting commissions, we can restore fairness, protect voting rights, and uphold the principle that voters should choose their politicians, not the other way around."

Congressman Nickel recently introduced the FAIR MAPS Act, a bill to combat partisan gerrymandering by establishing independent, non-partisan redistricting commissions in every state. The Duke University Quantifying Gerrymandering team’s research found that if national legislation ended the practice of gerrymandering, there could be 37 to 42 more competitive House seats. That would double the number of competitive House seats available today.

The Congressman’s bill has been endorsed by numerous local, state, and national organizations such as Campaign Legal Center, Communications Workers of America Union (CWA), Common Cause, Democracy Green, Down Home North Carolina, End Citizens United, Equality North Carolina, League of Women Voters of the United States, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), North Carolina Asian Americans Together (NCAAT), North Carolina Justice Center, and NC Counts.

In Congress, Nickel is also pushing for passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act: federal legislation to end partisan gerrymandering, expand voting by mail, protect early voting, help get big money out of our elections, support election integrity, and make reforms to improve ballot access. Additionally, Nickel helped introduce the Redistricting Transparency and Accountability Act with members of the North Carolina delegation to establish transparency and accountability requirements for congressional redistricting processes.
