Congressman Nickel Introduces Security Clearance Improvement Act

Today, Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) introduced the Security Clearance Improvement Act, a bill to bar conspiracy theorists and participants of the January 6th assault on the United States Capitol from obtaining a national security clearance or access to classified information.

The bill, previously introduced by former Congresswoman and January 6th Select Committee Member Stephanie Murphy (FL-07), directs the Office of Personnel Management to modify the Standard Form 86 questionnaire used for national security eligibility determinations to include questions regarding an individual’s membership in, or association with, organizations spreading conspiracy theories regarding the Government and participation in the activities occurring at the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.

“January 6, 2021, was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. The events of that day demand deep reflection and accountability,” said Congressman Wiley Nickel. “The Security Clearance Improvement Act is a common sense solution to ensure that conspiracy theorists or those who were at the Capitol on January 6th get nowhere near classified information or our country’s national security secrets.”
