Congressman Nickel Hosts Redistricting Roundtable

Today, Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) hosted a roundtable ahead of North Carolina’s redistricting process to discuss the need for fair maps, equal representation, and the importance of protecting the right to vote.

Congressman Nickel was joined by State Representative Abe Jones and leaders and advocates from Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, NC Counts, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic in North Carolina, Communications Workers of America, Southern Coalition for Social Justice, North Carolina Asian Americans Together (NCAAT), Raleigh Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, NC Black Alliance, and Down Home NC.

“It doesn't matter who's doing it - Democrats or Republicans - partisan gerrymandering is bad for democracy,” said Congressman Wiley Nickel. “With the North Carolina General Assembly set to redraw electoral maps, it was great to hear directly from the leaders and advocates who will be on the frontlines working to bring awareness, fairness, and transparency to the redistricting process. I firmly believe that voters should choose their politicians. Politicians shouldn’t choose their voters. I’ll continue to do everything I can to fight for fair maps, end partisan gerrymandering, and protect the right to vote for every single North Carolinian.”

“I love the fact that this room is filled up with community organizations,” said State Representative Abe Jones. “We need to let people know what the rules are, and that’s what I'm going to be about, trying to educate folks, because this is important.”

“Workers in North Carolina deserve fair representation in Congress and the General Assembly,” said Drew Edwards, Communications Workers of America. “The working people who build our infrastructure already don’t get a fair shake. They need their voices represented in the legislative process, and that’s why we must end gerrymandering not only in North Carolina but across our country.”

“It’s so important that we all come together to fight for one common cause: voting rights,” said Shannon Halbur, Johnston County Local Group Lead Moms Demand Action. “The discussion we had today with Congressman Nickel is a message we have to take everywhere. In the fight for a safer future, fair redistricting is critical.”
