Congressman Nickel Announces Over $227,000 for Shaw University STEM and Biotech Programs

Today, Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) announced the U.S. Department of Education’s Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) has awarded Shaw University $227,749 to implement a new program, “Biotech CONNECT: Academic-Business Partnerships to Diversify North Carolina’s Biotech Workforce.” This program will equip students with hands-on biotechnology research skills, as well as match students for paid summer internship opportunities to gain professional workforce experience.

“I’m proud to announce that Shaw University is receiving this vital funding to prepare students for professional careers in science, technology, engineering, and math,” saidCongressman Nickel. “This funding puts our tax dollars to good use by supporting students in their college completion, as well as post-graduation employment.”

The MSEIP assists predominantly minority institutions in effecting long-range improvement in science and engineering education programs and increasing the entrance rate of underrepresented students into science and engineering programs. The program aims to improve the quality of training and enhance minority institutions’ scientific research capabilities.
