Congressman Nickel Announces $125,000 for Local Community Coalitions Working to Prevent Youth Substance Abuse

Today, Congressman Wiley Nickel (NC-13) announced three North Carolina Drug Free Community (DFC) coalitions have been awarded a total of $125,000 in federal funding from the White House Office of National Drug Policy (ONDCP). This funding will help to address the nation’s drug overdose epidemic and prevent youth substance abuse. The following North Carolina DFC coalitions will receive funding: Fuquay-Varina Coalition for a Healthy and Safe Community, Hope Coalition, and Pender County Substance Use Prevention Partners.

“I’m proud to announce that these three North Carolina coalitions are receiving vital federal support to combat the opioid crisis,” said Congressman Nickel. “This funding will help our communities prevent youth substance abuse and keep our kids safe. Every dollar invested in prevention is a step toward saving lives.”

The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, created by the Drug-Free Communities Act of 1997, is the nation’s leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent youth substance use. The DFC Program provides grants to community-based coalitions to address youth substance use, implement evidence-based prevention locally, and ultimately, save lives.
